Mother Nature gives way for super Saturday at Hamilton County Speedway

October 13, 2018

Dave Cain of Corcoran, Minn., won the Olsen Family USRA Modified main event.

Dave Cain of Corcoran, Minn., won the Olsen Family USRA Modified main event.

Mother Nature gave race fans a break from the latest round of cold and wet weather on Saturday at the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive, and the competitors jumped at the opportunity with 133 cars and drivers packing the pit area.

Perhaps the best feature of the night took place in the Malvern Bank Super Late Models where Webster City’s Ryan Griffith scored his second win in a row—the last coming in the regular season finale 50 days ago—after a hard-fought battle with SLMR standout Cory Zeitner of Omaha, Neb.

Griffith, who started sixth, collected $1,000 for his efforts over Zeitner who started eighth in his first trip to the historic half-mile clay oval this year.

Another deep-field starter, Scott Fitzpatrick of Cedar Falls, raced from 12th on the grid to third at the end of the 20-lapper with 10th-starting Jason Hahne of Webster City holding off Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls for fourth.

In the Olsen Family USRA Modified main event, another new face at the facility emerged with a win as Wissota veteran Dave Cain pulled in from Corcoran, Minn., pulled out with the $1,000 top prize.

Cain started eighth in the 20-lap affair and kept ninth-starting Jeff Aikey at bay to pick up the win while a pair of Elliotts—Dennis and Mark—were third and fourth, respectively.

Dennis Elliott, who hails from Mounty Ayr, Iowa, currently sits fifth in the summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points battle while Mark Elliott is a veteran racer from Webster City.

Delhi, Iowa’s Mark Schulte rounded out the top 5 finishers.

Kevin Donlan of Decorah found his way into Integrity Trucking Victory Lane for the first time this season in the 20-lap Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car feature race, holding off Webster City’s Todd Staley and defending Iron Man Challenge champion Derek Green of Granada, Minn., in the process.

Reigning track champion Steve Jackson of Polk City, Iowa, claimed the fourth spot with Modified standout and engine builder Kevin Stoa of Albert Lea, Minn., finishing fifth after starting 11th.

The front row was the highlight of the show in the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod main event.

Continuing a stellar 2018 campaign, Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minn., pocketed a $500 paycheck for winning the 20-lap race form the pole position while outside front row starter Rocky Caudle of Ellsworth stayed right there and followed Boumeester to the checkered flag.

Teenager Jayden Larson of Mankato, Minn., started and finished third with Doug Smith of Lanesboro coming from 10th to finish fourth and 2018 track champ Ty Griffith of Webster City rounding out the top 5 from the ninth starting spot.

In the 15-lap Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stock finale, Eric Stanton of Carlisle parlayed his pole position into a $400 victory—his Hamilton County Speedway best eighth triumph of the season.

In doing so, Stanton kept his national title hopes alive as four-time champ and current points leader Dustin Gulbrandson finished second after starting ninth.

Myles Michehl of Fort Dodge, Daniel Smith of Lake City and Justin Lichty of Marion completed the top 5 at the finish line.

Barry Taft of Argyle collected $200 in his first visit to the track this season, copping the USRA Tuner 10-lap feature by besting Nate Hughes of Humboldt.
