The Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive finally outlasted Mother Nature to complete the second Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series event of the season Saturday night.

In the season debut of the Malvern Bank Super Late Models, Charlie McKenna of Ames took the win over Jeremy Grady, Darrell DeFrance, Jason Hahne and Ryan Mitchell.

After a rough opening night, J.D. Auringer of Evansdale bounced back to collect the $500 top prize in the Olsen Family USRA Modified feature. Webster City’s Mark Elliott charged to a runner-up finish, followed by John Davis, Scott Olson and Ethan Dotson.

Veteran Hall-of-Famer Steve Jackson of Polk City captured the victory in the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars, with Craig Berhow, Todd Staley, Bob Sutherland and Parker Slagle completing the top five.

Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod action saw Rocky Caudle of Ellsworth claim the trophy and a $400 paycheck for his efforts. Ty Griffith raced to a second-place finish, Kadden Kath’s first visit to the track netted the Owatonna, Minn., driver a third-place finish, Jake Sachau was second and Jared Timmerman finished fifth after starting tenth on the grid.

Carlisle’s Eric Stanton passed every car but the winner on opening night but wound up second at the finish line in the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks. On Saturday, he got the job done to take the win over defending USRA national champion Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D. Derek Willert, Chanse Hollatz and Myles Michehl rounded out the top five.

The only repeat winner from opening night, Nate Coopman of Mankato, Minn., topped the USRA Tuner main event over Ryan Bryant, Matt Oberhelman, John Dahlsten and Oliver Monson.

In a special appearance at the half-mile Hamilton County Fairgrounds, the DTRA Dirt Trucks put on a show with Miles Michehl of Fort Dodge collecting the winner’s paycheck. Rick Clark, Steve Jackson, Ryan Spangler and Lucas Richardson were second through fifth, respectively.

Area school teachers gathered on the track for the “Teacher Feature” and Sunset Heights Elementary teacher Marty McKinney of Webster City took home bragging rights.

After taking the Memorial Day Weekend off, action returns on Saturday, June 2, for Armed Forces Night presented by D&B Agro-Systems. Malvern Bank Super Late Models, Olsen Family USRA Modifieds, Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars, Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods, Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners are on the six-division card for the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.
