Rust pockets Mod moolah, Griffith stays perfect at Hamilton County Speedway

The Karl Chevrolet Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, hosted Kids Night presented by Diamond in the Rough on Saturday with kids enjoying a candy toss, coin dash and car rides while fans of all ages witnesses another week of amazing racing in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.

The Olsen Family USRA Modifieds had $1,000 up for grabs for the winner and Joel Rust of Grundy Center claimed the cash with a strong effort over points leader Kyle Brown of Madrid.

Defending track champ J.D. Auringer of Waterloo was third at the finish line, Dennis Elliott of Mount Ayr nabbed the fourth spot and Clear Lake legend Al Hejna cruised to a fifth-place finish.

With $700 at stake for the winner of the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car main event, Derek Green of Granada, Minnesota, used some late-race heroics to fend off Grundy Center’s Steve Meyer for the win.

Myles Michehl of Fort Dodge was the third driver to get the checkered flag with Calvin Lange of Humboldt and 15th-starting Bill Crimmins of Fort Dodge completing the top five.

Defending Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod track champion Ty Griffith of Webster City passed 11 of his fellow competitors en route to snagging his third win in as many tries.

Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minnesota, started ninth and found his way to a runner-up paycheck with Garner’s Josh Appel, Nate Whitehurst of Mason City and Doug McCollough of Webster City rounding out the top five.

The Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks had $500 to win dangling before them and Manly’s Scott Dobel reached out and grabbed it while garnering his first feature win 0f the 2021 campaign.

Mason City’s Zack Smidt scored a second-place paycheck after starting eighth and a trio of Fort Dodge racers—Jeremy Crimmins, Danny Sassman Jr. and Bryce Sommerfeld—rounded out the top five.

The MyRacePass USRA Tuners saw Jade Lange of Humboldt pocket the $200 winner’s share of the prize money with fellow Humboldt resident Mark Wastun following in second.

Next Saturday, May 22, the Karl Chevrolet Hamilton County Speedway will host the Bob Flaws Memorial Race and Stock Car Challenge presented by Pepsi with Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars competing for at least $1,500 to win and $400 to start while Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks will hash it out for a $750 top prize.

Opening in July 1910, the Karl Chevrolet Hamilton County Speedway is the oldest speedway in the state of Iowa. In 1938, work began on the current location at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The semi-banked half-mile dirt track was completed in the spring of 1939, and the first races were held on the track in September of that year.

The racetrack is located off US 20 at exit 140, then 1.2 miles north, then 0.5 mile east on Bank St., then 0.4 mile south on Bluff St. to the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Webster City, Iowa.
