Staley, Jackson, Gulbrandson rumble to Wednesday night wins in Webster City

June 12, 2019

Todd Staley celebrates after winning the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car feature during the Rumble By River at the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive.

On a sunny but chilly “Hump Day” at the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive, the Rumble By The River lived up to its name with the drivers in the Arnold Motor Supply Iron Man Challenge putting on a wild show for the bundled-up fans.

Tuesday’s program was rained out, so the speedway hosted a one-day blockbuster on Wednesday that attracted the best of the best from Iowa and several surrounding states.

Steady Staley banks big bucks: The Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars always provide a nail-biting experience for the fans of the historic half-mile clay oval in Webster City, Iowa, and with $3,000 up for grabs Wednesday night not a single driver wanted to give a single inch—which isn’t a whole lot less than what Todd Staley won the 35-lap feature race by.

Along with general manger Brad Ratcliff, Staley spent many hours the last two days preparing the track surface for the big show and was rewarded with yet another smooth race track that produced tons of passing and let drivers use every inch of the track from top to bottom.

Staley, however, primarily used just the top of his hometown half-mile oval.

Starting on the pole put the USRA and USMTS boss on the bottom of the track for the start of the race and by the end of the first lap he was battling to hang on to fourth place.

Moving to the top, he returned to the bottom again a few laps later but eventually settled on the high line after slipping as far back as sixth.

Meanwhile, multi-time national champ Mitch Hovden of Decorah was blistering the field but saw his big advantage wiped out by a caution flag just shy of the halfway point of the race.

When the green flag returned, two drivers squirted past Hovden in turns one and two with Hovden tagging the wall in the opposite corner one lap later and dropping out of the top five.

The battle for the lead became a three-way fight between Decorah’s Dillon Anderson, Brian Mahlstedt and Staley when Mahlstedt’s ride went up in smoke with 18 down and 17 to go.

On the ensuing restart, Staley took command and fended off multiple challenges from Anderson and Derek Green of Granada, Minn., when the yellow flag waved for the final time with six laps to go.

The final stretch run was amazing with Hovden rising from the dead and blasting ahead of Anderson and Green to claim the second spot and begin applying heavy pressure to Staley as the pair raced nose to tail with the right side of their race cars clearing the mud off of the concrete wall in the corners.

Green fought back and powered underneath Hovden as Staley continued at the front of the four-car freight train. In the final turn, Staley remained at the top of the banking with Hovden in the middle and Green down low with the trio exiting the final turn virtually side by side.

At the finish line, Staley emerged with his first win of the 2019 campaign while Green nipped Hovden for runner-up honors. Jason Minnehan got by Anderson to take the fourth position at the checkers.

In addition to banking three grand, Staley also received a new kayak courtesy of Stumpy’s Stow & Mow and Stumpy’s Bar & Grill.

Todd Staley won the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car feature.

Jackson on the money: Whenever or wherever there’s big money on the line, more often than not Kris Jackson is money in the bank. Such was the case again in Wednesday night’s Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod 30-lap feature.

Following a brief visit from the yellow flag on the opening lap, the field of five-star B-Mod racers went the distance from there without a single caution which made for some hair-raising lapped traffic for the front-runners to navigate.

Jackson, from Lebanon, Mo., started on the outside of the three-wide front row, and took the lead on the first lap. Although he led the last one too and every lap in between, the defending Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion had to contend with Webster City’s Ty Griffith—the defending track champion in the division.

Griffith stuck with Jackson the whole way, racing side-by-side for most of the first half of the race. Back-markers sometimes helped and sometimes hindered the leaders, but Jackson was able to maintain the top spot throughout to earn the $2,500 top prize while Griffith settled for the runner-up paycheck.

Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minn., claimed the third spot following an extended battle with defending Iron Man champ Dan Hovden of Decorah, who finished fourth. Boone’s Jake McBirnie finished fifth.

Jackson received a a new kayak courtesy of Auto Drive of Fort Dodge on top of his winner’s check.

Kris Jackson won the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod feature.

Gulbrandson gets $2,000 gift: Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., possesses five straight national titles in the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stock division, but Eric Stanton of Carlisle is generally the man to beat at the Hamilton County Speedway.

The first half of the main event was a tight battle between four drivers but Stanton and Gulbrandson eventually distanced themselves from the rest of the field to settle it among themselves. Stanton led while Gulbrandson followed in second with the laps winding down.

A caution slowed the pace with seven laps remaining. Back under green, Stanton’s race car suddenly lost power and he coasted into the infield while Gulbrandson set sail out front, never to be challenged en route to a $2,000 victory.

Justin Luinenburg of Reading, Minn., followed Gulbrandson to the finish line with Jamie Songer of Ankeny in third and a pair of Manly men--Zac Smith and Scott Dobel—completing the top five.

Gulbrandson also took home a new kayak courtesy of Leon’s Pizza in Webster City and Reilly Armstrong Plumbing of Fort Dodge.

Dustin Gulbrandson won the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobbys Stock feature.
