The Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive hosted D&B Agro Systems Kids Night presented by Shivvers on Saturday, with fan’s getting another exciting Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series event and drivers enjoying the best racing surface on the planet.
In a battle for supremacy in the Super Late Models presented by Malvern Bank, it was Charlie McKenna’s turn this week as the Ames racer held off Webster City’s Jason Hahne for the win and closed to within seven points of Hahne in the points battle.
Polesitter Ryan Griffith of Webster City held on for third with Gabe Umbarger of Garner and Todd Johnson of Mitchellville completing the top five.
In the Olsen Family USRA Modifieds, last Saturday’s runner-up finish left Jeff James with some unfinished business, and the Stanton speedster finished it this week with his first win at the historic half-mile dirt oval.
Californian Ethan Dotson claimed the runner-up spot while Jacob Murray of Hartford finished third. Fourth went to Christopher Elliott of Webster City and Chase Ellingson of Williams wound up fifth.
Blake Adams of McIntire raced from his starting spot on the inside of the second row to take the checkers in the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car feature race.
Josh Zieman of Plymouth was second, Justin Ades of Webster City was the third-place finisher, Gary Bass of Des Moines snagged the fourth spot and points leader Reid Keller of Webster City passed seven cars to claim the final position among the top five.
Defending track champ Ty Griffith of Webster City and Jason Bass of Fort Dodge passed seven and eight cars, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone Doug Smith of Lake City who brought the field to the green flag in the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mod main event and led them all the way to the checkered flag.
Smith became the fifth different winner in five shows this season while Griffith and Bass settled for second and third. Cole Denner of New Hampton finished fourth and Norwalk’s Jared Timmerman was fifth.
Jamie Songer of Ankeny picked up a popular win in the main event for the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks while Bryce Sommerfeld of Fort Dodge, who started eighth, settled for the runner-up paycheck.
Scott Dobel of Manly held off points leader Eric Stanton of Carlisle for third place with Roger Haupt of Webster City taking home fifth-place money.
Despite leading the points, Oliver Monson of Clear Lake had yet to win a feature race in the MyRacePass.Com USRA Tuner division before Saturday, but got the job done by keeping Matt Oberhelman of Fort Dodge from snaring his third.
Another Fort Dodge racer, Lucus Jones, claimed the third position, John Gill of Marshalltown finished in the fourth spot and Justin Nielson of Lu Verne rounded out the top five.
Let’s get ready to Rumble: The one everybody has been talking about is here. The Rumble by the River takes place Wednesday, June 12, with one of the richest purses of the summer for Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks. Drivers will draw for heat race starting spots with starting lineups for Wednesday's main events determined by passing points.
The racing will be fierce with the A-Main in each class starting three-wide. Stock Cars will race 35 laps for $3,000 to win and $300 to start. B-Mods will race 30 laps for $2,500 to win and $250 to start. Hobby Stocks will race 25 laps for $2,000 to win and $200 to start.
If time permits, Wednesday will also be the crowning of three first-time-ever feature winners in each class. Rules for this race is you may not have won a feature in this class ever—doesn’t matter if it was sanctioned or not. Whomever wins, this will be their first win! All drivers will draw for their starting spot. Each class will run a 15-lap feature event and Trampel Farms has added $100 to the winner of each class!
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstands opening at 5. The drivers meeting takes place at 6:15 with hot laps and racing to follow.
