Holtz, VanDenBerg claim USRA Iron Man hardware at Hamilton County Speedway

July 7, 2016

Two new winners visited victory lane Thursday when the USRA Iron Man Series invaded the Hamilton County Speedway with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series.

In the Holley USRA Stock Car main event, Phil Holtz of Manchester nailed down his career-first Iron Man Series win after a furious back-and-forth feature race that saw four lead changes in 18 laps.

Holtz grabbed the lead at the start but faced fierce competition throughout the race with Pat Graham of Ames snagging the lead away on two occasions only to have Holtz power back to the front on the next lap.

The win was worth $750 while points leader Kyle Falck of Decorah garnered the runner-up spot.

Nathan Wood of Sigourney was third, Derek Green of Granada, Minn., started and finished in the fourth spot and Jake Masters of Graettinger rounded out the top five.

In Out-Pace USRA B-Mod action, Carter VanDenBerg of Oskaloosa grabbed the lead from Mike Tanner of Kansas City, Mo., on lap 7 and then paced the final eight laps to score a $600 win at the half-mile dirt oval in Webster City.

Trevor Fecht of Allison put the heat on the leader late in the race but had to settle for the runner-up paycheck.

Boone's Jake McBirnie wa third, Tanner held on for fourth and points leader Cole Denner of New Hampton placed fifth.

The series moves to the Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, on Friday night for another date with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.

The Mason City Motor Speedway is a semi-banked 1/2-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds).
